In 2024, the Colonel Irvine School Council proudly sponsored Policy P24-01, advocating for the Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA) to recommend a framework to the Minister of Education that integrates climate and biodiversity education throughout the K-12 curriculum. This proposed framework emphasizes hands-on learning experiences grounded in critical thinking, equity, and well-being. We are pleased that this policy was passed at the ASCA AGM and is now an official ASCA policy.

Additionally, the Colonel Irvine School Council supported Policy P24-03, which champions the improvement of indoor air quality (IAQ) in Alberta classrooms and shared environments.

At Colonel Irvine School, our commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond policy advocacy. Our Leadership Students regularly take action by picking up litter on school grounds, fostering respect for both each other and the planet.

In alignment with the Calgary Board of Education’s Sustainability Framework 2030, we actively promote anti-idling practices outside of the school grounds. Reducing vehicle idling helps improve air quality, protects the health of our students, and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By encouraging this simple yet impactful behaviour, we aim to empower our community to take part in creating a more sustainable future.

Aligned with our focus on teaching and learning about Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Rights, we strive to cultivate a culture of care, respect, and sustainability for future generations.
