Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

It’s hard to believe that we are midway through September.  We are hopeful that your child is getting back into the routine of school. We know that working to develop good work habits, taking time to relax when we can, eating well and getting enough sleep are key factors in being successful. We look forward to a successful year of teaching and learning with your child.

We had a fantastic evening on Wednesday at our “Meet the Teacher.” It was great to meet and connect with parents/guardians. Wednesday was also the first cross-country meet for our cross-country running team. Basketball and soccer tryouts are also in full swing and if they aren’t already finalized, it will be soon. We want to thank everyone that tried out for a team.

Next Friday morning, we will hold our annual Terry Fox run. We’re super excited to take part in this annual tradition that supports cancer research while building school spirit. We are encouraging each student to bring a toonie for cancer research. All proceeds will go towards the Terry Fox Foundation. We are hoping to raise $4000 this semester for the foundation. You can also make an online donation at https://schools.terryfox.ca/ColonelIrvine

If you are new to the CBE, student marks can be found online in your myCBE account. As much of the initial schoolwork is formative (for learning and not marks) you can expect marks to appear towards the end of this month.

Did you know that CBE schools have an anti-idling policy? In keeping with our targets, remember to turn off your vehicle while waiting in front of the school. Reducing idling helps lower air pollution and protect our children's health. If you would like more information you can review the CBE Sustainability Framework 2030. In keeping with our targets, remember to turn off your vehicle while waiting in front of the school. Reducing idling helps lower air pollution and protect our children's health.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood

Purchasing Novel Study Books

Grade 7 parents will notice a $10 fee on your child’s MyCBE account, this fee is for our upcoming novel study, Refugee.  Grade 7 students will need their own copy of the text so that they are able to use strategies like highlighting, colour marking, marginal note-taking, bookmarking and re-reading for deeper understanding at their own pace. You are free to purchase the book from anywhere, however, as a school we have been able to secure them for $10. You may choose to pay for the fee now or before we start our novel study which will begin around the end of October. A more detailed parent letter would be sent beforehand providing more information and confirming how you will acquire the book.

There will be a similar charge for the Grade 8 and 9 students later in the year when they begin their novel study.

Athletic Try-outs and Seasons of Play

Grade 5 students are NOT eligible to try out. Grade 6 students are eligible to try out for most of the teams.

Bussing

Learn your child’s bus letter and make sure they know as well. Familiarize yourself with the route and stop information. This can all be found in your Parent PowerSchool account.

You will need to sign up for the bus notifications (see below) as we do not always get timely messages about late or unavailable buses due to emergent issues. The MyBusStop app is your best way to stay up to date. In case of bus delays after school, there is a student phone available in the hallway outside of the main office for students to reach you. Students will not be left unattended. This phone is unable to call long-distance phone numbers. Office phones are not monitored after 3:30pm. You should have a backup plan in place for when a bus is not available.

MyBusStop App and Myschoolbusmonitor.ca

It is linked to the bus’s GPS which allows for up-to-date tracking of the physical bus.

This code will be required to sign up. CBERD4165X

Myschoolbusmonitor.ca – web browser

You can sign up for email notifications!  This means timely updates, as soon as dispatch posts a delay.  This also applies to any updates for the delays.

Our recommendation is that you utilize both systems.

Technical support is available for both systems, please contact the support email for whichever system you are having issues with.

When time allows the school will also send out a School Messenger with details. Please pay attention to the effected routes that will be mentioned in the message title.

It has been brought to our attention that there may be delays with updates for the Bus K route. If you are experiencing issues with the app please fill out this feedback form

Colonel Irvine Office Hours

If your students are participating in after school activities at the school please make sure that you have a plan for picking them up. The office does not have someone answering phones after 3:30pm. There is a phone that students can use to call home just outside the main office.

Lock Bicycle in Courtyard to Prevent Theft

We encourage students to use the bike rack in our courtyard. Unfortunately, we had a couple of bikes stolen several years ago from out front when bikes were locked on the front rails of the school.
