Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

Thank you to all the students for wearing orange to school in support of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation also known as Orange Shirt Day. For more information on events taking place this weekend for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation you can visit https://newsroom.calgary.ca/city-services-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation-2024/

Today there is no school as it is a non-instructional day for all CBE schools. Our teachers will be working on our school development plan, Individual Program Plans and English Language Benchmarking for students. The non-instructional days provide our staff with time to collaborate with each other to best support teaching and learning.

We had our annual Terry Fox Run yesterday afternoon. It was great to see our students get into the spirit of walking or running this year. We’d like to thank our parent volunteers who came out to support us and a big shout out to Ms. Yeo for organizing our run. Our School Resource Officer also joined in the fun cheering our students on. Constable Shaw had both Ms. Dalwood and Ms. Ko in the back of her cruiser, “taking us away” for giving out too much homework. It was a great way to end the week.

So far, we have raised almost $900 for the Terry Fox Foundation. We will be having a bubble tea fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 4th. We are again partnering with Gong Cha (Marlborough location) to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation (TFF). Students can purchase mango slush with pearls or a milk tea with pearls for $8. Students need to pre-order Tuesday – Thursday. Please note that we will not be able to provide any refunds if your child is absent on that day. Pre-orders will be available next week. All proceeds will go towards cancer research. Unfortunately, so many are affected by cancer directly and indirectly. We are proud to support this cause annually. This year we have a goal of raising $4000 for the TFF. Donations can also be made online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/ColonelIrvine. Thank you to all the students who brought in a toonie and more for the Terry Fox Foundation. We are grateful for the generosity of our students and families. Together we can make a difference.

Next Tuesday, we will be having our first Principal Student Advisory Council and Student Council meeting. We will be combining the two councils this year to seek student input on how to make the school a better place for everyone. Some of the feedback we received and implemented last year was around having more clubs, providing access to more sports equipment at lunch, recognizing more cultural celebrations and giving out more student awards. Students can listen to announcements for more information on this opportunity as well.

We’d like to remind your child to be on time for classes. We want to help students form good habits. We have some students returning late for instructional time after lunch. Moving forward, students will be required to make up for the loss of instructional time during the following lunch period. We encourage students to stay on campus and if students do go off campus, it is their responsibility to come back on time. An email will be sent home if students are late after lunch.

Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the long weekend.

Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood

Spectators at school sporting events

CBE middle schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect, and a positive experience for all. They include:

  • All visiting student spectators/athletes must be under the direct supervision of a designated adult for the duration of the games.
  • There are no in and out privileges for spectators. If you leave the building, you should not re-enter.
  • Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building.
  • Cell phones must remain in bags. No photos or recordings can be made by students. This is a privacy concern for the athletes from all teams.
  • Parents are asked to be mindful if they are taking photos or videos of their child. The privacy of other student athletes should be considered.
  • All spectators - students or adults - are expected to cheer and support players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner.
  • Disrespectful behaviours will be addressed by school administration promptly and may result in spectators being directed to leave the game and the school building.
  • Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible at all times for their direct supervision. Please ensure that they are not wandering the halls and playing on phys ed equipment in the gym/on stage

These expectations have been reviewed with all of our students in school. Please review with your student(s) as well. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
