The Week Ahead - December 15

Good afternoon Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

Firstly, we’d like to thank the Colonel Irvine School Parent Advisory Association (CIPAA) and all parents that donated generously for providing our staff with a delicious lunch today. We are so appreciative and thankful for the support of our School Council and CIPAA and we are grateful for the time together as a whole staff.

Today, teachers kicked off Spirit Week (which starts next week) by dressing like the students! This was a surprise for the students, and we hope they enjoyed it. Next week students will have the chance to do the same. Here are the themes for each day:

Monday, December 18 – Crazy Hair and Ugly Sweater Day

Tuesday, December 19 – Twin Day

Wednesday, December 20 – Dress like a Teacher Day

Thursday, December 21 – PJ Day

Friday, December 22 – Formal Friday

Monday evening, we host our Winter Band Concert at Diefenbaker High School, and we are really excited for this opportunity for students to showcase their learning. Remember to bring cash for the 50/50 draw. All proceeds go towards supporting the band program.

Purdy chocolate orders went home this week. Special thanks to the School Council for organizing this fundraiser for the school, and particularly Ms. Clara Wong, our fundraiser coordinator.  Please email cilau@cbe.ab.ca if you have any questions about your order.

A reminder that next week will be our last week to fill our bins for the Mayor’s Food Drive. We ask if it is possible that all students bring in a canned good (or two), to help support others this holiday season.

Please, please, please DO NOT pickup/drop off in the parking lot of the stores just north of us. This is very inconsiderate and makes us seem to be poor neighbours. The business owners are very frustrated that they and their customers cannot find parking at the end of our school day. When they have tried to approach vehicles/parents they have been greeted with hostility. We ask that you please respect the businesses and store owners and do not pick up your students from that lot. Please make arrangements to pick them up somewhere else.

Lastly, we encourage all students to work hard this coming week to complete their schoolwork, as we want them (and parents/guardians) to enjoy a mostly school-free winter break. Students will have until January 12th to hand in missing work to teachers. This deadline is necessary to give teachers enough time to assess the work before report cards are available online at the end of January.  Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about these dates.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood

Colonel Irvine Parent Advisory Association (CIPAA) would like to support the school administration for all the amazing work they do by organizing a holiday appreciation lunch for all the teachers and staff. Based on last year's holiday appreciation lunch, we anticipate that the cost will be approximately $20 per attendee and the school has confirmed that there are in the range of 52 staff members. We therefore estimate the cost to be approximately $1,100.

It’s not too late to contribute to the Holiday Appreciation Lunch for Staff and now you can do it by e-transfer too! Please see message below. E-transfers can be sent to colonelirvineschoolcouncil@gmail.com and the Password is “StaffLunch”      The decision was made at the November School Council/CIPPA meeting to fund this event from the General Account. However, please note that in lieu of gifts of appreciation for the school staff, this year we will be accepting donations to use towards this appreciation lunch.  If you would like to, or are able to participate, cash or cheques can be dropped off at the front office.  Please be sure to indicate the funds are for the HOLIDAY APPRECIATION LUNCH.     Any additional funds raised less the expenses for the lunch will be donated to the purchase of food hampers to support school families during this holiday season.    We give a heart-felt thank you to the parent community and amazing team of educators and staff and wish you all a very happy holiday season!  Colonel Irvine School Council and Parent Advisory Association

Updated: Spotlight on Wellness:

Research confirms that spending time outside is good for mental health and overall wellbeing. Try these tips to help your kids connect with nature and maintain positive mental health. Try going outside for just a few minutes each day, then work up to longer stretches of time. Here are some ideas that can help:

·         Talk with your kids about healthy after school routines. Encourage them to disconnect from technology and spend time outside.

·         Take stock of activities you typically do indoors, then try moving them outside. For example, read or play board games in the backyard. Turn your meals into outdoor picnics or have family chats when you’re out walking the dog.  As a family, plan outdoor activities you’ll do together, like biking, camping, or going on a nature hike. Schedule these activities in your family calendar—this will make you more likely to stick to your plans.
