The Week Ahead - February 5

Final preparations are now underway for our Lunar New Year celebrations. Thank you to the volunteers who stepped up to help decorate. Lunar New Year (also called the Spring Festival) typically begins with the new moon that occurs between the end of January and the end of February, and it lasts about 15 days, until the full moon arrives with the Festival of Lanterns. 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon, beginning on February 10th, 2024 (Chinese New Year) and concluding on January 28th, 2025. The dragon is the fifth of the 12-year cycle of animals in Chinese astrology. In Chinese culture, the Dragon holds a significant place as an auspicious and extraordinary creature, unparalleled in talent and excellence. It symbolizes power, nobility, honor, luck, and success. Thank you to all families that returned Lunar New year ticket requests, we will sort through these on Monday and send another message then.

Great job to our Senior Boys Volleyball team for placing 1st at the Ernest Morrow invitational tournament. Our Senior Girls lost in 3 sets in the final. Well done to both teams for their effort and teamwork. The wrestling team had their divisional meet on Wednesday. Well done to our student wrestlers for a great season. Thank you to our coaches Mr. Chang and Ms. Fan for volunteering their time to support our team.

CBE is changing all school websites with a target launch date of February 8th. For your reference our new school website will be https://colonelirvine.cbe.ab.ca

Most Grade 9 students received high school course selection sheets today, (some exceptions were Aberhart, Mandela, Thirsk)  we noticed afterwards that some were sent without course level recommendations. We can add these on Monday if students bring them back or whenever students bring return the forms. Every high school form is different so please read through it carefully. On all of them they will need to select the option classes they wish for next year. They also require a parent/guardian signature. All students only received course forms for their designated high schools. We need all of these back by Wednesday, Feb 14 even if you are applying for a transfer. You will receive a new form if/when your transfer is approved.

Lastly, we’d like to welcome back Ms. Fenwick to our school community and thank Mr. Ukrainetz for supporting our school community in her absence. We’d also like to welcome Ms. Jin Tian and Ms. Kiana Wong to our school community starting Monday, February 5th. With these new teachers, some classes will have new teachers on Monday. Those students impacted will be receiving a separate email.

Thank you for helping to build and foster a strong school community. Have a great week everyone.

Ms. Ko & Ms. Dalwood

Report Cards

If your student has an individual program plan these will be sent home by mid-February.

Updated: Report card for grade 5 and 6 students only

By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.

What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card

CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:

·         Fall 2022 start:

·         Mathematics (K-3)

·         English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)

·         Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)

·         Fall 2023 start:

·         Mathematics (4-6)

·         English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)

·         French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)

·         Science (K-3)

In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.

Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.

Athletics

As volleyball games start CBE middle schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect, and a positive experience for all. They include:

• All visiting student spectators/athletes must be under the direct supervision of a designated adult for the duration of the games.

• Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building.

• All spectators - students or adults - are expected to cheer and support players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner.

• Disrespectful behaviours will be addressed by school administration promptly and may result in spectators being directed to leave the game and the school building.

• Parents/guardians who bring younger children are always responsible for their direct supervision. Please ensure that they are not wandering the halls and playing on stage or with any equipment.

These expectations have been reviewed by all our students in school. Please review with your student(s) as well. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

Wrestling season has come to an end. A big thank you to Mr. Chang and Ms. Fan for volunteering their time and efforts to coach the team!

Spotlight on Wellness – Healthy relationships

Healthy friendships are important to your child’s growth and development. Kids learn how to socialize with others by spending time with their peers. Friendships build their confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging. But even healthy friendships can have troubles, and your child might need your support to figure out the way forward. Over the next few weeks “Spotlight on Wellness” will focus on what you can do to help your child navigate friendship challenges.

How to help your child with healthy relationships: Lead By Example. Your child learns about healthy relationships by watching you and other adults they care about. When it comes to relationships, think about the values that matter most to you and your family. Try to demonstrate these values in your day-to-day interactions with others. For example, your actions show your child how to:

Treat people with respect

Communicate assertively

Solve problems

Negotiate and compromise

Manage emotions in a healthy way
