The Week Ahead - January 29
Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community.
Our Mandarin program students and teachers have been working diligently to prepare for our Lunar New Year celebrations on February 7th. They will perform for the whole school that morning and for families in the evening. Did you know that more than 2 billion of the world’s 8 billion population will celebrate Lunar New Year? Some of the countries that have public holidays during Lunar New Year include China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Malaysia, North Korea, Singapore and Brunei.
Some of our grade 9’s went on a tour of North Trail high school yesterday. Students designated to Fowler will go on their tour Monday, Churchill students Tuesday, and Diefenbaker students on Feb 8. Please make sure the field trip form for your designated high school is returned before the trip date.
Report cards are available for viewing on Tuesday. Details on how to access are below. If your student has an individual program plan these will be sent home by mid-February.
Good luck to both our senior volleyball teams. They will be competing in a tournament at Ernest Morrow Junior High School.
Next week, is also the start of February, which is Black History Month. During this month our Humanities classes are taking a closer look at the significance of why representation matters through film studies. Films not only capture the stories and experiences of different individuals and communities, but they also have the power to shape our perceptions, challenge stereotypes, and promote empathy. By exploring diverse narratives and perspectives, we can expand our understanding of the world and foster a more inclusive society. Through film studies, we will critically analyze how representation influences our perceptions and explore the importance of amplifying marginalized voices. Below are the films each grade will observe and engage with.
· grade 5 - Soul
· grade 6 - Princess and the Frog
· grade 7 – Remembering the Titans
· grade 8 – Hidden Figures
· grade 9 – Invictus
Thank you for helping to build a strong school community. Have a great week everyone.
Ms. Ko & Ms. Dalwood

Report Cards:
Report Cards will be available for viewing on Tuesday, January 30 through your parent MyCBE account. Please see the following LINK for instructions on how to view report cards.
Updated: Report card for grade 5 and 6 students only
By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.
What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card
CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:
· Fall 2022 start:
· Mathematics (K-3)
· English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
· Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)
· Fall 2023 start:
· Mathematics (4-6)
· English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)
· French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
· Science (K-3)
In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.
Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.

High School:
High school designations have been confirmed and we have posted a list up on the high school bulletin board at the school. This is the best way for students to figure out their designated high school for next year. We are waiting to distribute high school course selection sheets until report cards are viewable on January 30. Report card marks will help to inform your decisions for course selections for next year.
This year there will be recommendations for the level of programming on the high school course selection sheets. These recommendations indicate where teachers feel your student will experience success as the enter high school based on their current skills and abilities. We are doing this in collaboration with the high schools. If you are not in agreement with the course recommendations, you will need to reach out to the high school and have a conversation about changing the recommendation.
If you are attending our high school information session on Feb 1 at 6pm, please find information to join the Teams meeting below.

A reminder that transfers are not first come first serve, they just must be in by March 15.

Updated: Spotlight on Wellness – Stress:
Stress can impact student learning and well being. Here are some ideas to relieve stress:
· Exercise. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to manage stress. Walking is a great way to get started.
· Write. It can help to write about the things that are bothering you.
· Let your feelings out. Talk, laugh, cry, and express anger when you need to with someone you trust.
· Do something you enjoy. A hobby can help you relax. Volunteer work or work that helps others can be a great stress reliever.
· Learn ways to relax your body. This can include breathing exercises, muscle relaxation exercises, massage, aromatherapy, yoga, or relaxing exercises like tai chi and qi gong.
· Focus on the present. Try meditation and imagery exercises. Listen to relaxing music. Try to look for the humour in life. Laughter really can be the best medicine.
