The Week Ahead - November 15

Good afternoon Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

Today was a non-instructional day for CBE students. For teachers, it was our System Indigenous Professional learning day called Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First). Staff heard from Elders and Indigenous students about how we can better support Indigenous worldviews and students within our schools.

Yesterday we had our Remembrance Day ceremonies to honour our past and present armed forces members. Today marks the 105th anniversary of the end of the First World War.  We'd to like to bring special honour to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and for those who continue to do so around the world. We are so fortunate to live in Canada. We hope the ceremonies help students to reflect on contributions of past and present military operations, to think about what they can solve conflict through dialogue and understanding, and perhaps encourage others to join the armed forces in the future. We want to express our gratitude to all the students and families that contributed to the poppy fund and the Veterans’ food bank drive. Also, thank you to our cadet members, student speakers, singers and musicians, and the teachers who helped with the ceremonies. There will be other special events and ceremonies taking place around our city on Sunday, November 11th. Click on the link for ideas: https://www.familyfuncanada.com/calgary/remembrance-day-ceremonies/

Good luck to all our athletes and coaches on the basketball teams as they will be playing finals next week.  More information on the game schedule is below. We’d like to thank all our student and teacher volunteers for supporting all our home games this season.

Lastly, we'd like to wish Happy Diwali to our students and families who celebrate this holiday. The main celebration date is Sunday, November 12th this year.  Diwali is India's most important holiday of the year. It is a five-day festival of lights celebrated by millions of people across the world. It celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and the human ability to overcome. We hope everyone will have a Diwali that brings happiness, prosperity and joy to you and all your family.

Please note that teachers will not be sending a weekly learning update today. We hope that everyone will enjoy the new fall break this year and we will see you back on Wednesday, November 15th.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ms. Ko and Ms. Dalwood

Grade 9 Optional West Coast Sailing Trip – Information Session

Every year, we try to offer our grade 9 students the opportunity to go on a West Coast trip. For this trip, we fly out as a group to Victoria, BC, and live onboard sailboats for 5 days/4nights in the Salish Sea off Vancouver Island. The cost for the trip is usually around $2,800 (which includes flights, ground transportation and food and activities while onboard the sailboats). We can take a minimum of 13 students and a maximum of 29 students. As such there will be a student meeting to gauge interest for this year’s trip, on Monday, November 20th, during lunchtime in Rm. 25. There will also be a VIRTUAL Parent meeting on Friday, November 24 from 3:00–3:30 pm. The link will be sent out closer to the date.
