The Week Ahead - November 6-17

Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

Today we had a guest speaker Alvin Law to speak with our students. He shared with students his story of overcoming his challenges and how our attitude is important. He reinforced messages that we share with students about all being different, the importance of kindness and creating a welcome and safe space for all students. Ask your students about Alvin, and his story.

On Tuesday, students participated in activities in the afternoon. Students and staff wore some fabulous costumes. We were able to raise more money through donations for the dance and snack sales put on by our STUCO. All funds will go to the Terry Fox Foundation and we will share an update on our fundraising efforts so far next week.

We had sessions for our Grade 9’s to prepare them for high school. For more information on this and sessions we are offering for parents please see High School section below.

We will have our annual Remembrance Day ceremonies on Wednesday, November 8th. The grade 5-7 assembly will occur 9:15-10:00am. The grade 8 and 9 assembly will occur between 10:10-11:05am. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend. If you will attend, please email nadalwood@cbe.ab.ca if you will be attending so that we can plan accordingly. We would like to encourage students, if possible, to bring a non-perishable food item next week for the Veterans food Bank and also a loonie for poppies, which will go to the Legion. Thank you for your support and kindness. Together we can make a difference.

A reminder for everyone to turn back their clock one hour on Saturday night as daylight-saving ends on Sunday

Thank you for your continued support.

Ms. Ko & Ms. Dalwood

Updated: High School:

This was an introductory session in which we discussed the basics such as designated high schools, possible pathways to a high school diploma, the multitude of options in programming such as, IB, AP, Dual Credit, and Exploratory Programs and the importance of the next few months in setting themselves up for success in high school. More information will be shared with them and with you over the next few months. Students from our school are designated to 10-12 different high schools. At this point, we are not sure of boundaries for the 2024-25 school year. Once we know, we will share that with students and families.  We will also be holding three drop-in parent Q&A sessions regarding high school during parent/student interviews. There will be two in-person sessions at the school, one on November 22nd from 6:30-7:30pm, and the other on November 23th from 5:30-6:30pm. We will also have an online session on November 25th  from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Please keep this in mind when booking interviews. All sessions will share the same information, if you are not familiar with the transition to high school, and programming options in high school, we would encourage you to attend. As shared in previous message, please review high school information on the CBE website

John G. Diefenbaker

John G. Diefenbaker’s IB program would like to invite any interested grade 9 families to attend our upcoming IB Information Evenings on November 21 and 22nd.

Diefenbaker IB open house

Sir Winston Churchill

Who should attend? All grade 9 students and their parents who are interested in finding out more about our IB program. During these IB information sessions, we will talk about what the IB program is, what to expect and what you need to know about applying. You will hear from former students and have an opportunity to ask questions. These are repeat sessions to allow for a more intimate setting; you only need to attend one.
