The Week Ahead - September 25
Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community. Today there is no school as it is a non-instructional day for all CBE schools. Our teachers will be working in curricular groups on task design and also on Individual Program Plans and English Language Benchmarking. The non-instructional days provide our staff with time to collaborate with each other to best support teaching and learning.
We’d also like to bring to your attention that there is now a Fall Break for CBE students. Students will not have school November 9-14 and will return to school on Wednesday, November 15.
We would like to thank all the parents that joined us for our School Council/Band Council and Parent Advisory meeting on Tuesday evening. It was nice to see returning faces and to meet some new parents. We are extremely fortunate to have a council to support our learning community. If you missed this meeting and are interested in participating this year, the next meeting will be an online meeting on Tuesday, October 17th at 6:30pm. Meeting link and agenda will be shared the week before.
Yesterday, we had our annual Terry Fox Run. Students seemed to enjoy it and the weather was great for it. Our School Resource Officer also joined us. We’ve been very fortunate to have her work with our school community. She also met and visited with our students and staff at our Welcome Back BBQ
On Tuesday, September 26 we will be having our first practice lockdown. Students will be informed about this ahead of time and Calgary Police Services will be here to help us. This is the first of two practice lockdowns we will have this year.
We will be having a bubble tea fundraiser for Thursday, September 28th. We are again partnering with Gong Cha (Country Hills and Marlborough location) to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation (TFF). Students can purchase mango slush with pearls or a milk tea with pearls for $8. Please note that we will not be able to provide any refunds if your child is absent on that day. Orders will be taken on Monday and Tuesday. All proceeds will go towards cancer research. Cancer has touched the lives of so many and we are proud to support this cause annually. This year we have a goal of raising $3000 for the TFF. Donations can also be made online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/30862 Thank you to all the students who brought in a toonie and more for the Terry Fox Foundation. We are grateful for the generosity of our students and families. Together we can make a difference.
On Thursday, September 28th we will be encouraging students to wear orange shirts to school. The official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day this year is Saturday, September 30th. The day honors the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
Lastly, we wish all the families who celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival, a fun filled time! This year, Mid-Autumn Festival is on Friday, Sept 29th. It is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. On this day, the moon is at its roundest and brightest, symbolizing togetherness and reunion. People decorate their places with lanterns. Families get together to have dinner, appreciate the moon, and eat mooncakes. Mid-Autumn Festival is also a popular observance in many other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines but with different names.
Thank you for your continued support.
Ms. Ko & Ms. Dalwood
