Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community,

下午好! 学文学校社区,

And it’s June and field trip season.... The grade 7’s had a great day and great weather at Heritage Park on Monday. The Grade 9’s enjoyed the Da Vinci Code at Vertigo Theatre yesterday.

Tuesday was our annual Spring Concert at Diefenbaker. The students sang and played some fabulous pieces. Their hard work in preparing for the concert was evident. Thank you to John G Diefenbaker High School for hosting our concert and special kudos to Ms. Hammond and Mr. Haller for their efforts in making the concert a success. We would also like to give gratitude to our band council members for all their fundraising support for the band program.

The last day for all students to submit assignments and library books is Friday, June 13. Work handed in after this date will not be included in the report card.

As we prepare for the upcoming Provincial Achievement Tests (Grade 6 and 9, schedule below) we want to share that the last day of regular core classes (Math, Science, ELA and Social) classes for the Grade 9’s will be June 13th.  After this they will write provincial achievement tests in the morning and have tutorial sessions and gym in the afternoon. The grade 5-8's will have regular classes until June 24th. June 25 and 26 (half day) we have year-end activities planned.

June is an exciting month for Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing:

As a school, we will be engaging students in land-based learning on Friday, June 20.

All CBE staff, students, and families are invited to participate in upcoming city-wide events! Check out the Indigenous Awareness Week Calgary website for a list of celebrations and gatherings happening throughout the week of June 14–21, including a powwow on Saturday, June 14 at the Elbow River Camp.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We are proud to be a part of Colonel Irvine School learning community.

Ms. Ko & Ms. Dalwood

Building Resiliency in Today’s Youth | Community Education Services | June 5 | 12 – 1:30 p.m.

Before High School graduation, one-third of adolescent girls will experience depression, anxiety disorders, self-harm or an eating disorder. However, there is an incredible power in caregivers who can support our youth, both young women and men, before they seek therapy.

At Juno House®, we believe in the extraordinary healing power of parents, caregivers, coaches, and teachers. In our 1.5 hour workshop presentation, we will share steps and strategies from the Juno House Therapeutic Model® that will provide effective emotional coaching tools for today’s youth as they develop through adolescence and into young adulthood.

We believe that talking does not grow neurons; experience grows neurons. This workshop is designed to give caregivers the skills to become their child’s emotional coach. The workshop will provide participants with:

• Basic introduction of interpersonal neurobiology,
• Where emotions live in our brains,
• The essential role emotions play in mental well-being,
• How to identify emotions in youth,
• How to become an emotional coach in only five steps.
