Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区

Please read the separate email regarding parent/teacher conferences bookings for conferences will be available to parents on Saturday, November 22nd. We will have 2 sessions about high school for parents. One will be Thursday night at Colonel Irvine from 6:30 – 7:30 and one online on Friday at 10:00 to 11:00. Please see the link below if you are interested in learning more about high school programs and transitions.

As in the past, our school partnered with the Canadian Veterans Services Society to work together to donate food and household products to veterans. Each grade had its own box for donations, making this an unofficial race to see who can fill the boxes first. The timing was aligned with Remembrance Day and so it was a perfect way to support those who have served this nation. Colonel Irvine donated 216 lbs. (100 kg.) of food which equals $3.52 per lb. = $760.32 worth of food. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the caring heart of our students and the amazing parents who helped. By the end of this project, the Grade 7s were able to donate the most food, with the Grade 5s being a close second. Thank you to all the grades and all the parents who likewise donated so much to this cause. We are so proud!

Also, in relation to school spending, our printing costs are much higher than last year and we have asked all our teachers to be conscientious of their printing. If students are losing paperwork, we will be asking that they print them at home, or from their own accounts at school so that we can better track.

Lastly, we want to highlight that the Colonel Irvine Band program's winter concert will be held in the Colonel Irvine Gym on Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 6:30PM. You can look forward to fantastic tunes prepared by our Grade 7 Band, 8-9 Band, and Jazz Band, as well as a silent auction. The students have been working hard to show off their talents - please consider purchasing a 'pay-what-you-can' ticket to continue supporting the band program at this link: Winter Concert Tickets. These funds will go directly to enhancing the band experience by being applied toward fees for clinicians, guest conductors, bussing, etc. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your continued support,

Ms. Ko and Mr. Ferguson

Conferences

Conference bookings will be open on November 22 at 8:00 am.

Please note that you will need to book individually with each teacher you wish to speak with. Each conference booking is 10 minutes, and they are back-to-back for teachers. Please be mindful of this during your conferences. Teachers may not have a time slot for every student. As a staff we work to ensure ongoing communication throughout the school year to students and their families so that there is an opportunity for students and parents to get feedback and make adjustments prior interviews and report cards. As such, grades and comments are uploaded regularly in PowerSchool with further information in D2L/Google Classroom. At this time, we encourage families to take time with their child(ren) to review grades and comments posted by teachers, review attendance, and decide if what you already know is all positive and satisfactory that you may not need to book an interview at this time. If you have questions, please reach out directly to teachers.

As a reminder, teachers also post reminders (due dates, current work and other course information) in D2L and in their Friday emails. The following are links to assist you in using the digital tools used by teachers:

If you are booking an online session on the Friday we ask the following:

a. Preload Microsoft Teams' onto your digital device.

b. Review your child's progress in PowerSchool prior to the interview. What question(s) may you have?

c. When a teacher invites you into the meeting, please keep your camera on. We would like visual confirmation that a parent is present.

d. Include your child in the discussions. A conversation with the student, family and teacher tends to be the most effective.

e. Parents can only log in to Microsoft Teams 5 minutes prior to the interview starting. If you are a CBE employee, using your CBE email, please do not log into your Student Conference until the exact time of your meeting, otherwise you will interrupt the current meeting as you do not have the waiting room access.

f. The conference link will be included in the original email received from: SchoolConferences-NoReply@cbe.ab.ca

To book in-person and/or online conferences you need to login through your myCBE account.  If you do not have one, you can use the guides below.

  • Parents Sign In:MyCBE | PowerSchool > myCBE Apps > my School Conferences

  • Guide: Parents can find support information (including user guides for booking a conference, joining a conference, and a quick reference guide) on the Technical Support for Students & Parents site, under MyCBE / PowerSchool - School Conferences

Please note that with the new booking system your child’s teachers will automatically populate as an option to book. If you do not see a teacher you wish to speak with, please click on the toggle button to the right “Show All Conference Leads.”

High School (Grade 9’s)

Next week We will be meeting with all Grade 9 students to talk to them about high school. We are starting to plan for high school transitions. This will be ongoing between now and the start of March. We will put all information related to high school transitions in this section moving forward. If you have a student in grade 9, please check this information regularly.

This week we are sharing with our grade 9’s the importance of the first semester report card marks. Their marks will determine what courses they can select for high school. These sessions will give a brief overview of what you can expect over the next few months with regards to getting ready for high school, and will also provide time for Q&A.

In the meantime, the CBE High School website is a great place to start to learn about high school information. You may also wish to visit the individual high schools’ websites.
