Good afternoon, Colonel Irvine School Community.

下午好! 学文学校社区,

It’s hard to believe that we are midway through September.  We are hopeful that your child is getting back into the routine of school. We know that working to develop good work habits, taking time to relax when we can, eating well and getting enough sleep are key factors in being successful. We look forward to a successful year of teaching and learning with your child.

This year we have a 15-minute wellness block after lunch in our timetable. This week in our Wellness Block, we are focusing on building students’ executive functioning skills, including binder organization and learning to use the “Agenda” sheet to track schoolwork and responsibilities. The agenda sheet can be found in a sheet protector at the very front of your child’s binder. To support this routine, we ask that parents review and sign the agenda each weekend. Teachers will check for signatures and collect the agenda sheets every Monday. Thank you for partnering with us to help students strengthen these important skills.

Grade 7 - 9 teachers have also noticed several students with accordion binders. Although this may seem like a good way for students to keep classes organized, we find that students misplace their work as it isn't hole-punched and secured in a binder. We ask, if at all possible, to provide 3-ringed binders for your student(s) to help keep them organized for the year.

We had a fantastic turnout on Wednesday night at our “Meet the Teacher.” It was great to meet and connect with so many students and families. Wednesday was also the first cross-country meet for our cross-country running team. Basketball and soccer tryouts are also in full swing and if they aren’t already finalized, it will be soon. We want to thank everyone that tried out for a team. We are looking forward to cheering on our Roadrunner athletes.

Next Thursday morning, we will hold our annual Terry Fox run. We’re super excited to take part in this annual tradition that supports cancer research while building school spirit. We are encouraging each student to bring a toonie for cancer research. We will also have a bubble tea fundraiser for Friday, September 26th. All proceeds will go towards the Terry Fox Foundation. We are hoping to raise $4500 this semester for the foundation. You can also make an online donation at https://schools.terryfox.ca/ColonelIrvine

If you are new to the CBE, student marks can be found online in your myCBE account. As much of the initial schoolwork is formative (for learning and not marks) you can expect marks to appear towards the end of this month.

Lastly, please reach out to the teachers if you have any questions as to why your child was marked late or absent incorrectly for a class. Teachers are responsible for attendance and can confirm if they were late or absent. Sometimes errors are made with attendance and that can be corrected.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ms. Ko and Mr. Ferguson

School Council

Please join us on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30 pm in the Learning Commons for our first Colonel Irvine School Council (CISC) meeting of the 2025/26 school year.

All parents and caregivers are welcome! This is a great chance to:

  • Learn about how our school council works with our principal to enhance student learning.
  • See how parents, caregivers, and community members contribute to a thriving school community.
  • Find out how you can get involved in supporting our students and staff.

To read more about the role of school councils, visit this link:

School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority under the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation (94/2019).

This year, we are looking to fill the following roles, with new members to be voted in at our first meeting:

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Casino Coordinator
  • Fundraising Coordinator (could be shared by 2 or more people)
  • CIBPA Liaison (Colonel Irvine Band Parent Association)

These are not huge time commitments, but we do ask for a one-year term. Don’t worry—you’ll have lots of support, and we work as a team to strengthen our school community.

Bussing

Learn your child’s bus letter and make sure they know as well. Familiarize yourself with the route and stop information. This can all be found in your Parent PowerSchool account.

You will need to sign up for the bus notifications (see below) as we do not always get timely messages about late or unavailable buses due to emergent issues. The MyBusStop app is your best way to stay up to date. In case of bus delays after school, there is a student phone available in the hallway outside of the main office for students to reach you. Students will not be left unattended. This phone is unable to call long-distance phone numbers. Office phones are not monitored after 3:30pm. You should have a backup plan in place for when a bus is not available.

MyBusStop App and Myschoolbusmonitor.ca

It is linked to the bus’s GPS which allows for up-to-date tracking of the physical bus.

This code will be required to sign up. CBELSMST3H

Myschoolbusmonitor.ca – web browser

You can sign up for email notifications!  This means timely updates, as soon as dispatch posts a delay.  This also applies to any updates for the delays.

Our recommendation is that you utilize both systems.

Technical support is available for both systems, please contact the support email for whichever system you are having issues with.

When time allows the school will also send out a School Messenger with details. Please pay attention to the effected routes that will be mentioned in the message title.

It has been brought to our attention that there may be delays with updates for the Bus K route. If you are experiencing issues with the app please fill out this feedback form

Colonel Irvine Office Hours

If your students are participating in after school activities at the school please make sure that you have a plan for picking them up. The office does not have someone answering phones after 3:30pm. There is a phone that students can use to call home just outside the main office.

Monday - Thursday

Lock Bicycle in Courtyard to Prevent Theft

We encourage students to use the bike rack in our courtyard. Unfortunately, we had a couple of bikes stolen several years ago from out front when bikes were locked on the front rails of the school.
